Canadian support for immigration hits 25-year low

A recent annual study by the Environics Institute reveals a significant shift in Canadian attitudes towards immigration. Support for high immigration levels has plummeted to its lowest point in 25 years, with six in ten Canadians now believing the country accepts too many immigrants. This marks a substantial 14-percentage point increase in negative sentiments compared to 2023. Based on over 2,000 phone interviews, the survey highlights concern about the cost of living and housing affordability as key factors driving this change. Despite the decline in support, most Canadians still recognize the positive impact of immigration on the national economy and value the contributions of immigrants to their communities.
