Ottawa has spent $94 million on refugee accommodation since the last election

Since the election, nearly $94 million has been allocated by the federal government to secure entire hotel rooms for an extended period to accommodate asylum seekers entering Canada. Most of these “long leases” were Quebec-based hotels for asylum seekers, especially those entering Canada through Roxham Road’s irregular border crossing. The Immigration Department said the government wants to alleviate the strain on provinces, even though provincial authorities are responsible for providing housing and assistance to asylum seekers.
