No, you can’t work in Canada as a visitor. To legally work, you need a valid work permit. Visitor status and worker status are completely different. Canada takes unauthorized work seriously and has put systems in place to prevent it. While you might hear stories of people doing it, the risks are high—you could harm your future immigration opportunities and end up in unsafe or unfair work situations. Also, many essential services like healthcare, banking, education, and government programs are linked to your legal status. Working without proper authorization is not worth the risk.

Yes, if you’re studying at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and hold a valid study permit, you may be eligible to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during school terms and full-time during scheduled breaks. However, this only applies to post-secondary education—students in short-term language programs (like English or French courses) are not allowed to work. Also, your spouse or common-law partner might be able to apply for a work permit depending on your status.

Graduates from eligible programs at recognized DLIs (Designated Learning Institutions) who’ve maintained good status during their studies can apply for a PGWP. This permit functions like an open work permit and allows you to work for any employer in Canada after graduation. Not all programs or schools qualify—always check eligibility before enrolling.

A DLI is an institution approved by a Canadian province or territory to host international students. All primary and secondary schools are DLIs, even if not listed online. However, not all DLIs offer programs that qualify for a PGWP. If you're planning to work after studying, make sure your school and program meet PGWP requirements. You can check the list of DLIs on the official IRCC website.
