Funding cuts impact settlement services across Canada

Canada’s funding cuts to newcomer settlement organizations are causing widespread disruption across the country. Following Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s October announcement to reduce immigration targets by 20% through 2027, settlement agencies are facing substantial budget reductions, with some losing their entire funding. The cuts, which will see funding drop from $1.17B in 2024-25 to $1.12B in 2025-26 outside Quebec, particularly affect language training programs and employment services. Organizations report being caught off guard by these “off-the-cliff” cuts, warning that service demands remain high despite reduced immigration targets.
