Canada considers major shifts in permanent resident numbers

Immigration Minister Marc Miller has signalled potential significant changes to Canada’s permanent immigration levels in the upcoming Immigration Levels Plan. In a recent interview, Miller expressed that “all options are on the table,” including possible reductions in certain immigration categories. The Minister highlighted that 60% of current immigration is dedicated to economic immigrants, a proportion he considers “unprecedented” compared to similar countries. While acknowledging immigration’s role in Canada’s economic stability during the pandemic, Miller emphasized the need for a “thoughtful” approach to future immigration policies, considering factors such as housing pressure and affordability concerns.
