Housing minister indicates potential reforms to temporary visa programs if provinces do not take action

Housing Minister Sean Fraser warns of potential reforms to Canada’s temporary foreign worker and international student visa programs to address the housing crisis. Critics blame record-breaking immigration for the surge in residential real estate prices, despite the Conference Board of Canada’s analysis that newcomers help control inflation and fill labour shortages. The housing minister’s comments follow Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s suggestion of capping the number of temporary foreign workers and international students unless more housing is built. Fraser hinted at a potential cap on international study visas to reduce housing demand.
