Returning Canadian and international medical graduates have difficulties practicing medicine in Canada due to the scarcity of residency spots. Unfortunately, those who studied abroad face even more adversity in obtaining a residency than their counterparts who studied in Canada. This makes it almost impossible for them to pursue careers in Canada. Despite increased demand, the number of available spots for healthcare professionals in Canada has been gradually declining since the late 1980s. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has attempted to open up immigration programs for physicians and nurses alike. However, these efforts have not sufficiently remedied this growing shortage.
