A recent national survey conducted by Digital Public Square and the Munk School of Global Affairs reveals alarming statistics about transnational repression in Canada. One in seven individuals of Chinese, Hong Kong, Taiwanese, Tibetan, or Uyghur heritage report experiencing threats from foreign governments. The study highlights various forms of harassment, including online threats, physical intimidation, and family targeting. While 79% of overall respondents feel safe in Canada, only 43% of those who experienced threats share this sentiment, indicating a critical need for enhanced protection measures. Notably, 68% of ethnically Chinese respondents express concern about potential anti-Asian backlash from these revelations.
