The Federal Government of Canada seeks third extension for ‘Lost Canadians’ citizenship bill

Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced that the federal government requests a third extension to meet the court-mandated deadline for passing legislation addressing “lost Canadians” citizenship rights. The bill, aimed at rectifying a 2009 unconstitutional law, would restore citizenship rights to children of Canadian parents born abroad. The current December 19 deadline may be extended by three months, as legislative work has been stalled since September due to a Conservative privilege motion debate. The proposed legislation includes a new requirement for parents born abroad to have spent at least three years in Canada to transfer citizenship to their foreign-born children.
