The Ontario government is advancing primary care access by facilitating the practice of 100 internationally trained family physicians in rural and northern communities starting in 2025. Through the Practice Ready Ontario program, these doctors can quickly obtain licenses without unnecessary re-education, connecting an estimated 120,000 individuals to essential care. Participants will complete a 12-week assessment to confirm their competencies and commit to a three-year service return in the designated areas, undergoing training in various healthcare settings. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to address the province’s healthcare gaps, reinforced by an $88 million investment over three years to support undergraduate students pursuing family medicine. This funding will cover tuition and educational costs for those who agree to serve in communities across Ontario, potentially linking an additional 1.36 million people to primary care. These efforts aim to strengthen Ontario’s healthcare workforce and ensure accessible, high-quality care for all residents.
