Justice system’s response to hate crimes shows critical gaps, federal report reveals

A recent report from the Office of the Federal Ombudsperson for Victims of Crime highlights significant shortcomings in Canada’s justice system’s handling of hate crimes. The findings point to under-resourced police hate crime units and victims’ reluctance to report incidents as significant concerns. While the report examines impacts on various communities, including Indigenous, Black, Asian, and LGBTQ+ populations, notable statistics show Jewish Canadians as the most targeted group, with hate crimes rising 32% in 2023, followed by Black Canadians and those targeted for sexual orientation.
