Quebec’s plan to cut international students faces pushback from universities

Quebec’s public post-secondary institutions are resisting the government’s proposal to reduce international student numbers, arguing it could hinder their ability to attract top talent. Immigration Minister Jean-Francois Roberge, however, remains firm on including universities and CEGEPs in the plan. The proposed legislation would allow the government to cap foreign student enrolment based on various factors. While institutions claim this contradicts previous encouragement to recruit internationally, Roberge insists it’s necessary for overall reduction efforts, stating it’s “not reasonable” to exclude these institutions from the equation.
