Ottawa introduced a temporary open work permit policy for PNP candidates

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has unveiled a new temporary policy allowing certain Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates to apply for open work permits (OWPs). Effective from August 11 to December 31, 2024, this initiative aims to support eligible newcomers with job offers or valid work permits. Candidates must provide a support letter from their province or territory confirming their placement in an Expression of Interest pool. This policy seeks to adjust the ratio of temporary to permanent residents in Canada, helping provinces transition eligible temporary residents through their PNPs. IRCC hopes this approach will retain skilled workers and provide a clearer path to permanent residency.
