Canada has witnessed a staggering 62.3% increase in asylum claims during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to recent data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The number of claims has skyrocketed to 92,130, up from 56,760 in 2023. This surge puts significant pressure on Canada’s immigration system and local resources, particularly in major cities like Toronto. Immigration Minister Marc Miller acknowledged the strain on municipalities and pledged continued support for vulnerable individuals. The dramatic rise in asylum claims is observed across multiple provinces, with Manitoba seeing the most significant percentage increase at inland offices.
