Canadian provinces welcome more refugees as Quebec seeks reduction

Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador are ready to welcome more asylum seekers to alleviate pressure on Quebec, contingent on federal financial support. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the need for federal assistance to address housing, healthcare, and social needs. Similarly, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey supports increasing refugee intake. During a meeting in Halifax, premiers discussed equitable asylum seeker distribution and federal aid. Quebec Premier François Legault seeks to reduce refugee numbers in his province, calling for relocation to other provinces. Other premiers, including Alberta’s Danielle Smith and Ontario’s Doug Ford, echoed similar concerns, urging Ottawa for expedited asylum assessments and support.
