Canada spousal sponsorship immigration sees April uptick despite yearly decline

In April 2024, Canada saw a rebound in spousal sponsorship immigration, with more spouses and common-law partners becoming permanent residents compared to March, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data. This increase nearly counteracted the 12.8% decline observed in March. By the end of April, Canada welcomed 22,800 new permanent residents through this program. However, due to lower numbers in February and March, this figure remains 24.8% lower than last year, when 30,335 individuals gained permanent residency. If the current rate continues, Canada could see 68,400 new permanent residents by year-end, down 9.1% from last year’s 75,260.
