According to the 2023 Global Trends report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Canada ranked fifth worldwide regarding asylum claims, with 146,800 out of 3.6 million. The report, which presents the latest official statistics on refugees, internally displaced people, stateless people, and asylum seekers globally, emphasizes Canada’s significant role as a shelter for refugees and asylum seekers amidst escalating global conflicts. The UNHCR representative in Canada, Rema Jamous Imseis, noted that the increasing instances of war and violence are driving more people to seek safety in Canada. Last year, 72% of asylum seekers in Canada whose cases were reviewed were granted refugee status.
