On June 11, 2024, Immigration, Population Growth and Skills of Newfoundland and Labrador announced that Atlantic Workforce Ministers demand the reversal of a $625 million cut to Labour Market Transfer Agreements (LMTAs), which was unexpectedly announced in the Federal Budget 2024. This cut affects workforce development programs, impacting sectors facing labour shortages and various demographic groups. The cut will also result in a $62.3 million annual reduction in funding for skills training and employment initiatives in Atlantic Canada. The Ministers highlighted the negative impact on individuals and employers and disputed the Federal Government’s claim that other funding sources could replace the LMTA cuts.
