A recent study by Statistics Canada reveals a significant drop in the rate of overqualified immigrants in the workforce, reaching its lowest in 20 years. The 2021 census data showed only 26.7% of recent immigrants were over-educated for their jobs, a decrease from 31.1% in 2016. Conversely, the number of immigrants with jobs suitable for their qualifications increased to 44.4% from 40% during the same period. The study suggests that high educational achievements increase immigrants’ chances of economic success as they are more adaptable to labour market changes. However, many highly educated immigrants remain underutilized, affecting their income and well-being. The study attributes this progress to job growth in high-skilled occupations and changes to the immigrant selection system that emphasizes positive attributes.
