Half of racialized individuals have encountered discrimination or unfair treatment in the past five years

According to the latest Canadian Social Survey, over a third of Canadians aged 15 and older have experienced discrimination or unfair treatment in the past five years. This prevalence was nearly doubled among racialized groups, with just over half (51%) reporting such experiences. The data gathered from January to March 2024 revealed that the rates of discrimination remained relatively stable since 2021 and disproportionately impacted marginalized groups, including racialized and Indigenous people, women, 2SLGBTQ+ populations, people with disabilities, and young adults. The survey is part of Canada’s Quality of Life framework, which aids in identifying policy priorities and enhancing evidence-based decision-making.
