On May 27, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced an increase to the application cap for the special measures aimed at Palestinian extended family members in Gaza. Minister Marc Miller expressed deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the call for assistance from loved ones. The number of temporary resident visa applications processed under these measures will increase from 1,000 to 5,000. While the current situation prevents movement out of Gaza, Canada is preparing for changes and aims to help more people. The country is working with Israel and Egypt to facilitate the exit of extended family members and ensure their safety.
