Ukrainians in Canada are advocating for an extension to the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). Immigration Minister Marc Miller, while not explicitly supporting the extension, acknowledges the need for flexibility given the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Roughly 90% of Ukrainians who arrived in Canada after Russia’s invasion in February 2022 want to stay permanently. However, CUAET only offers a three-year stay with open work and study permits. Nearly a quarter-million Ukrainians are in Canada under CUAET, with more arriving as the program’s deadline nears. Between March 2022 and February 2023, over a million applications were received under CUAET, with only 25.9% making the move.
