As thousands of students arrive on university campuses across Canada, the country faces an affordable housing crunch. Canadian universities have started innovatively providing affordable housing for their communities and managing demand. They do this by constructing new buildings quickly, repurposing existing ones, and creating new configurations for changing population needs. Examples include public-private partnerships like the University of Windsor’s new residence, McMaster University’s new residence for graduate students and their families, and the University of Victoria’s new LEED V4 Gold and Passive House status residence incorporating Indigenous design elements and teachings.
