In recent years, there has been a notable increase in migration to high-income countries, according to economists. Global North countries, including Canada, have seen a fast rise in their foreign-born population. Canada’s population growth rate of 2.7% in 2022 is the highest among the G7 countries and is among the top 20 countries in the world. Canada’s population increased by more than one million people, marking the first time in the country’s history that the population has increased by such a large number in just 12 months, and it is the highest annual population growth rate recorded since 1957. Most of this growth, 95.9%, can be attributed to international workers moving to Canada. Canada’s population could double in just 26 years if this trend continues.
