On June 15, 2023, the Canadian government expanded the Francophone Mobility Program for two years. This program allows Canadian employers to offer jobs to eligible candidates with a moderate command of French for most National Occupation Classification jobs, excluding primary agriculture. Initially reserved for highly skilled French-speaking temporary foreign workers, this program now offers more French-speaking immigrants the opportunity to gain Canadian work experience and potentially qualify for permanent residence. The French language proficiency criteria were also updated for all foreign nationals applying for a work permit under the program. Applicants must now provide documentary evidence of their language proficiency, such as a French evaluation test or a diploma from a French-language institution.
