On January 23, 2023, Manitoba witnessed a historic protest outside the Legislative building. International students and work permit holders rallied to make their voices heard in calling for significant changes to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). The protestors argued that current criteria around obtaining permanent residence status make it almost impossible for international graduates who move to the province from another province. The MPNP awards international students and work permit holders negative 100 points when they apply for permanent residency if their study or work experience was not attained in Manitoba. This makes it difficult for many international students and workers to apply for permanent residence successfully.
