The federal government is grappling with many lawsuits concerning its backlogged immigration applications, which has caused immense delays in processing and led to significant dissatisfaction for those stuck waiting for years for an answer. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has been the subject of an incredible 709 mandamus applications in federal court since April 2022 – a sharp rise compared to last year’s figures. Hundreds of people are desperately searching for a legal mandate, known as mandamus, that requires IRCC to process their applications expeditiously. Such an order would come from the court and direct lower courts or government entities to perform their required duties.
