Canada has pledged to accept at least 40,000 Afghan refugees. Since August 2021, approximately 16,370 Afghans have arrived in Canada. The Government of Canada established the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) for Ukrainians fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. This allows Ukrainians to enter Canada for a limited time period. So far, since January 1, 2022, 55,488 Ukrainians have entered Canada. Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that he wanted “to successfully resettle and make good on commitments to Afghan refugees and Ukrainians who are in search of safe haven.”
