On June 8, 2022, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that Canada has passed the milestone of welcoming 15,000 Afghan refugees since August 2021. The Government of Canada aimed to bring at least 40,000 Afghan nationals to Canada through the special programs for Afghan refugees, as well as via the special immigration program for Afghan nationals who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan. To individuals who still have not received a response on their refugee claims, the news may appear cold comfort. Many of these people were waiting for decisions because of IRCC’s delayed application processing.
