On May 24, 2022, the Government of Canada made a new update regarding the Afghan refugees in the country. As of now, Canada has welcomed a total of 13,905 Afghan refugees. The Canadian Government aimed to bring at least 40,000 Afghan nationals to Canada. Through the special programs for Afghan refugees, the Government is planning to resettle 5,000 Afghan refugees through the permanent residence pathway for extended family members of former interpreters, 18,000 Afghan nationals through the special immigration program for Afghan nationals who assisted Canadian forces in Afghanistan, and a mix of government-assisted and privately-sponsored Afghan refugees through the humanitarian program.
