Despite last year’s Covid-19 pandemic, Canada is deporting thousands of people, writes Reuters, and experts say removals are increasing and putting the deportees at risk due to the health crisis.
According to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), 12,122 people were deported from Canada in 2020, 875 more than in 2019 – the highest level since 2015.
According to the government, these steps are necessary and conducted in a safe way. The Canadian government said the number was so high last year since it included people who chose to depart independently, a so-called “administrative removals.” To compare, there were 1,657 administrative removals in 2019 while in 2020 this number reached 8,215 individuals.
