Renew A Permanent Resident (PR) Card In Canada

Permanent Residence (PR) Card Renewal

Permanent resident cards are valid for up to five years. If you’re about to or have less than nine months left on your card, then you’ll be able to apply for a new one. You will still be a permanent resident even if your card expires. The PR Card renewal process takes at least 49 days and can be done faster with urgent processing (for an additional fee). A $50 fee needs to be paid when renew your PR Card. To pay the renewal fee, you must submit the payment online and save the confirmation page as proof of payment along with the application. The application must include photos in accordance with photo specifications or it might get rejected.

Requirements for Renewal of a PR Card

To be eligible for a renewal of your PR card :

  • You must be a Canadian permanent resident and have stayed in the country for 730 days in the past 5 years.
  • You need a valid passport. If you don’t have one, and it’s impossible for you to obtain one, please provide an explanation why.
  • Free of any type of criminal conviction.

Only apply for a PR card if

  1. Your card has expired or will expire within the next 9 months.
  2. Your card has been misplaced, stolen, or destroyed.
  3. You did not receive your permanent resident card within 180 days of arriving in Canada.
  4. To officially change your name, citizenship, gender identification, or modify your date of birth, you must update your PR card.

How to apply for PR Card Renewal?

In order to renew your PR card, you’ll need to fill out the required application form IMM 5444e as well as any supporting documents. The following documents are required:

  • Your initial PR card will expire soon. If this is the case, you’ll need to keep it until your new card arrives.
  • In the case that a PR card is lost or stolen, proof of a lost or stolen PR card is required.
  • You’ll need to provide a copy of a valid travel document showing your name, nationality, birth date, and passport. Photocopies must show clearly.
  • Always take clear photos according to our photo specifications.
  • All clients need to provide a copy of their criminal records, which will show that they are not currently under any type of conviction.
  • Other identification papers may be required.

Documents required for PR Card Renewal

To renew your Permanent Resident Card, you will need to submit:

-A completed Application to Renew a Permanent Resident Card (IMM 5444). You can find this form on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.
-Your current Permanent Resident Card. If you do not have your card, you will need to submit proof of permanent resident status in Canada. This could be in the form of a Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence document.
-Two passport-style photographs taken within the last six months. The photos must meet the requirements set out by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, which can be found on their website.

If you are submitting your application from outside of Canada, you will also need to include a copy of your travel document (such as a passport) with your application.

Processing Time for Renewal of a PR Card

The average processing time for a PR card renewal is about 45 days. However, it is important to note that this is an average and some applications may take longer. If you are concerned about the status of your application, you can contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for more information.

What are the fees for PR Card Renewal?

Pay $50 for each application to renew your PR Card. If your application is successfully renewed, the application fee will be non-refundable. Permanent Residence holds a status and the status does not expire, only the PR Card expires. To avoid having your whole package returned to you, submit a complete application.
